English GCSE

Component 1 

• Reading - 19th-century non-fiction extract
• Writing - A choice of two writing tasks, linked by a theme to the reading extract

Component 2 

• Reading - 20th and 21st century literary fiction extracts
• Writing - A choice of two writing tasks, linked by a theme to the reading extracts
• Speaking and Listening – One presenting task that will be recorded for the exam board

• Our day class will take place on a Friday, 9am-11am
• Our evening class will take place on a Wednesday, 6pm-8pm

If you successfully complete this course, you will receive an AQA GCSE English Language.

All students must complete (01, 02 and 03 or 04) to be awarded the GCSE (9–1) in English Language**

Paper (01) 80 marks – 1 hour 55 minutes written paper 50% of the total GCSE
Paper (02) 80 marks - 1 hour 55 minutes written paper 50% of the total GCSE

• Speaking and Listening is reported separately

How marks are awarded across the two exams

• Reading - Paper 1: Identify language and evaluate 
• Reading - Paper 2: Identify structure and comparison 
• Writing - Paper 1: Transactional writing
• Writing - Paper 2: Fictional story

Speaking and Listening Assessment: This is reported separately, but it is still an integral part of the course and must be completed.

Upon successful completion of the course, students may wish to progress onto full-time employment or University. English Language is an entry requirement for most Universities.

Adult Funding Changes

Due to changes in Government funding from 1st August 2019, students who reside in some postcodes in Merseyside and Greater Manchester may be unable to access funding from training providers and colleges in Lancashire and may have to pay all associated course and support costs.

Please note, this does not include courses that are paid for by Advanced Learner Loans.
