With our on-site training restaurant, The Works, you'll gain valuable hands-on experience from day one, preparing and serving dishes in a real working environment. Neil Farrell

Head of Curriculum for Creative Service Industries

Having studied Sport and Exercise Science at both college and university, I began my career in the sport and active leisure sector before moving into education. During my time at West Lancashire College, I have managed a diverse range of curriculum areas and learning provision. My experience has included 16 to 18 provision, adult education, apprenticeships, Higher Education, community learning programmes, and provision for young people and adults with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). This broad experience has given me a deep understanding of the varied educational pathways available and the importance of creating opportunities for all learners to succeed. I firmly believe that education has the power to transform lives and that everyone should have access to high-quality learning opportunities. I am passionate about supporting learners to achieve their goals, realise their potential, and progress towards successful futures, regardless of their starting point.

Hospitality and Catering Lecturer

I began my career in the hospitality industry at the age of 17 when I enrolled on a Youth Training Scheme (YTS) course. I gained my Professional Cookery qualifications while working in a French brasserie, progressing to the role of Head Chef by the age of 23. Later in my career, I retrained and attended university, where I achieved an HNC in Environmental Health and a Certificate in Education before moving into teaching at a specialist SEN college. After 10 years in that role, I moved into mainstream Further Education, where I have delivered a wide range of courses from Entry Level 3 to Level 3, as well as Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeships. Drawing on my extensive industry and teaching experience, I am passionate about helping learners develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to achieve their goals and progress into successful careers. Supporting students as they grow, develop, and realise their potential is one of the most rewarding aspects of my role.

I chose this course because I enjoyed Food Technology at high school and wanted to develop my skills further. Throughout the course, I have enjoyed gaining hands-on experience and building my confidence in the kitchen, particularly when making a chocolate cake. The skills and knowledge I have developed have encouraged me to continue my studies, and I have successfully progressed on to Level 2.

I chose this course because I wanted to become a better cook and develop my practical skills in the kitchen. I have particularly enjoyed making dishes such as pizza and toad in the hole, which helped me build my confidence and improve my understanding of different cooking techniques. Throughout the course, I have developed valuable skills and a greater passion for cooking, which has inspired me to continue my studies. As a result, I have successfully progressed on to Level 2.
