Art and Design Level 3 students welcomed Melissa and Phil from Tate Liverpool to campus this week for an inspiring and informative guest talk, providing valuable insight into the exciting range of careers available within the gallery and museum sector.
As part of our ongoing partnership with Tate Liverpool, students had the opportunity to learn more about the wide variety of roles that contribute to the success of one of the UK’s leading art institutions. The session explored opportunities across the cultural sector, highlighting both creative and professional career pathways, from curators, exhibition designers and educators to marketing, visitor engagement and operational roles.
Drawing on their own industry experiences, Melissa and Phil shared an overview of their careers and offered students a behind-the-scenes look at life within a major gallery. They discussed the skills, qualifications and personal attributes that employers look for, while also providing practical advice on gaining experience, building professional networks and pursuing careers within the arts.
The talk encouraged students to think about the many different routes into the creative industries and demonstrated how artistic talent can be combined with a range of transferable skills to create rewarding career opportunities. Students also gained a greater understanding of the important role galleries and museums play in preserving culture, engaging communities and supporting creative talent.
The visit forms part of our commitment to providing students with meaningful employer engagement opportunities that enhance their learning and help them make informed decisions about their future careers. By connecting students with industry professionals, these experiences provide valuable real-world insight and help prepare them for progression into higher education, employment and the wider creative sector.
We would like to thank Melissa and Phil from Tate Liverpool for sharing their knowledge, experiences and advice with our students, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with future projects and opportunities.
