From student to Film Director: A return to the College that started it all

Geoff Owens, a successful film director and alumni of West Lancashire College, recently returned to the college to speak to staff as part of their Digital Development CPD Day.

Geoff studied Art and Design at the Ormskirk campus from 2001, where he also completed his English and Maths GCSEs. Over the course of three years, he studied Media Studies and Photography, an experience that provided him with the opportunity to explore and define his future direction. It was during this time that his teacher, Gary Owens, who still works at West Lancashire College, played a key role in inspiring him, helping him “catch the bug” for photography.

Geoff described the support he received at the college as instrumental, noting that both his GCSE tutors and his Art tutor were highly encouraging He reflected that the atmosphere at college differed greatly from high school, as he was treated like an adult and given a strong sense of responsibility.

Following his studies at West Lancashire College, Geoff built an extensive career in the media industry, working in television for over 20 years. During this time, he directed high-profile TV adverts for global brands including PayPal, Nike, Adidas and Coca-Cola. Among his many achievements, Geoff spoke proudly about winning a Disney animation project at the age of 27, noting it as a standout moment in his career. He highlighted that the skills he used for his pitch were developed during his GCSE studies.

Reflecting on his professional journey, Geoff said, “I’ve been most proud of sustaining a successful career spanning over 22 years, continually progressing while building strong industry connections. Working with Liverpool FC, Manchester United and Manchester City have been great highlights, as well as contributing to major feature film projects including Marvel productions, Sherlock Holmes and Fast & Furious.”

Geoff reflected on the lasting impact of his time at West Lancashire College, stating that it was the perfect foundation to get him started in his career and steer him in the right direction.
