Our Engineering Technology Level 2 course has been designed to open up the world of Engineering and to develop your knowledge and skills in design, manufacturing and maintenance. Studying the course with us will provide you with good employment prospectus, often with national and international opportunities.
We have strong links with local universities where students have progressed to this year, as well as onto an Apprenticeship.
Entry requirements
- 4 GCSEs at Grade 3-9, including English and a grade 4 in Maths
What will I achieve?
If you successfully complete this course, you will receive a Level 2 Diploma in Engineering Technology.
What will I learn?

What experience will I have?
- Guest speakers from industry and trade shows
- Live projects including HS2 and Future U project
- Trips and visits, including London and Vienna
- 2D and 3D Computer Aided Design
- Links with employers, including NSG and progression to Apprenticeships
- Fantastic Engineering facilities onsite including 3D System Cube Printers, PC controlled CNC Machining Centre, CNC and a CAD suite
How am I assessed?
- Building a portfolio of evidence about the work you do
- Completing practical tasks under supervised conditions
- Knowledge checks
- Multiple choice examination
- Practical demonstration/assignment
- Practical examination and one online exam
Where can I progress?
Upon successful completion of the course, students may wish to progress to our Design and Development for Engineering and Manufacturing (Engineering) Level 3 course, Entry in Employment, Higher Education including Degree Apprenticeship or an Apprenticeship.

If you are 16-18 years old, you do not have to pay course tuition fees.

Anthony Robinson
Advanced Technical LecturerI began my career in the motor industry at the age of 16, completing an apprenticeship before progressing to work as a Motor Vehicle Technician in both independent garages and main dealerships, including Honda, Toyota and Lexus. This extensive hands-on experience provided me with a strong technical foundation and a deep understanding of automotive diagnostics, repairs and emerging vehicle technologies.
Gareth Lloyd
Engineering LecturerI have worked at West Lancashire College since 2021, delivering engineering subjects including CAD, CNC, and Design to both BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma students. I have also taught CAD/CAM and Engineering Project units to HNC and HND students. Prior to moving into education, I worked as a time-served Toolmaker, developing expertise in a range of machining techniques, including milling, turning, and cylindrical and surface grinding. I also gained extensive experience in the manufacture, maintenance, and modification of power press tools. I draw upon my industry experience to provide learners with practical, real-world insights that enhance their understanding of engineering principles and practices. I am passionate about supporting students in developing the technical skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to succeed in their studies and future careers within the engineering sector.

Engineering LecturerI am a time-served engineer with over 22 years of industry experience across the aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, and glass manufacturing sectors. I am passionate about helping students achieve the best possible outcomes and actively engage with local employers to create valuable opportunities for our learners. Drawing on my extensive industry experience and technical knowledge, I bring learning to life by placing it within a real-world context. This helps to spark students’ interest, enhance their understanding, and prepare them for successful careers in engineering. I take great pride in developing the next generation of engineers and supporting them as they build the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to thrive in the industry.

Engineering Alumni StudentI chose to study Engineering because my family had always been passionate about the subject, and I had enjoyed learning about it at high school. This inspired me to continue my studies at West Lancashire College. My favourite part of the course was the workshop, where we created a variety of projects, including a plumb bob. My next step was to secure an apprenticeship with an engineering company in Wigan. Following the completion of my apprenticeship, my ambition was to progress into a project leader or project management role within the engineering industry.
