Our Supporting Teaching & Learning courses are perfect for those who are working in a school setting, or for those who have no previous relevant experience and would like to train for a career as a Teaching Assistant. To do this course, you must either be employed with a school as Teaching Assistant, or undertake a voluntary work placement in a school for a minimum of 6 hours per week.
You will be taught by our expert tutors who have worked within Primary settings and have a wealth of knowledge and tips to share with our students.

Supported Learning and TeachingDuring lockdown, I started to think deeply about my ambition of teaching children. I took the plunge to call Mell, one of the course tutors at West Lancs College. Mell made me feel at ease and I felt reassured that I was about to make the right choice. I have loved every minute of my course and especially enjoyed the theory elements. I absolutely loved my placement days, as I could start to put all the theory into practice and very quickly, I began to find my feet and I was becoming one of the EYFS team. In February, I successfully secured a full-time job at my placement school and I continue to love every minute of my job. I have been told that I am moving up to year 1 with my current class and will be teaching the class to cover the class teacher’s PPA, so I am very excited for the next chapter.

What can I do with a qualification in Teaching?
Daily tasks:
- Assists with or plans and develops curriculum and rota of teaching duties.
- Discusses progress with student, parents and/or other education professionals.
- Supervises teaching assistants and trainees.
- Undertakes pastoral duties.
- Teaches simple songs and rhymes, reads stories and organises various activities to promote language, social and physical development.
- Supervises students and maintains classroom discipline.
- Maintains records of students.
- Prepares students for external examinations and administers and invigilates these examinations.
- Prepares, assigns and corrects exercises and examinations to record and evaluate students.
- Prepares and delivers courses and lessons in accordance with curriculum requirements and teaches a range of subjects.
