West Lancashire College recently welcomed four pupils from St Bede’s Catholic High School, St Peter’s Catholic High School, Lathom High School, and Burscough Priory Academy to participate in their own version of WLC MasterChef 2026!
Pupils were provided with a brief set by Hospitality and Catering tutor Adam Swain, which included a £12 budget and the requirement to use locally sourced ingredients. Each dish had to consist of a minimum of one protein, two to three vegetables, one carbohydrate, and one sauce. Pupils were instructed to work independently to produce their final dish while showcasing a high level of skill and organisation.
Kai from St Bede’s prepared Poulet au Vin Blanc; Jacob from St Peter’s created a stuffed chicken breast with dauphinoise potatoes and a cream sauce; Marta from Lathom did her school proud by making a hotpot pie; and Nathan from Burscough produced a Lancashire leek-inspired carbonara with freshly made pasta and focaccia.
Neil Farrell, Head of Creative and Service Industries at West Lancashire College said, “Hosting the WLC MasterChef final was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the exceptional talent and dedication, of the young people in West Lancashire. It highlights not only the quality of our facilities, but also our commitment to nurturing the next generation of culinary professionals. We’re incredibly proud to play a part in such a prestigious event.”
Judged by Bevan Middleton, CEO of Holland Hall; Neil Farrell, Head of Creative and Service Industries, and Dawn Hughes, the Events, Campaigns and School Liaison Manager at West Lancashire College, the feedback provided to the school pupils was insightful, constructive and highly encouraging, highlighting both the strengths of the work presented and areas for future development. Marta, from Lathom High School, was crowned the winner, and all four pupils were rewarded with a behind-the-scenes tour of Holland Hall, including the kitchen where pupils are set to receive a culinary session from the Head Chef.
Adam Swain, the Hospitality and Catering tutor at the College said, “It was fantastic to see high school pupils take part in the event, bringing such enthusiasm, creativity and determination to the competition. Their willingness to step outside their comfort zone and showcase their skills was truly impressive, and it’s events like this that highlight the importance of nurturing young talent and inspiring the next generation. We’re incredibly proud to support opportunities that give pupils the chance to shine and explore their potential.”
The WLC MasterChef event showcased the exceptional talent, creativity and dedication of young aspiring chefs across the region. West Lancashire College looks forward to continuing to support and inspire the next generation of culinary professional through opportunities such as this.
