West Lancashire College recently participated in The Lancashire Colleges Skills Competition, which took place from the 12th to the 22nd of March, sponsored by the Lancashire Skills Hub and Future U.

The aim of the competitions was to reinforce a collaborative culture that delivers world class skills in all curriculum areas. Nine colleges from across Lancashire took part in the event and hosted a competition, seeing their ‘home team’ competing against those from other colleges.

The Lancashire Colleges was established in 1998 as a membership organisation to enhance collaborative activity between the Further Education and Sixth Form Colleges in Lancashire. TLC is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. TLC’s members are Blackburn College, Blackpool and the Fylde College, Blackpool Sixth Form College, Burnley College, Cardinal Newman College, Lancaster and Morecambe College, Myerscough College, Nelson and Colne College Group, Preston College, Runshaw College and West Lancashire College (part of NCG).

West Lancashire College were involved in 7 of the 9 competitions and excelled their skills in all subjects. Blackburn College hosted the Automotive competition, where Kenz, a Level 1 West Lancs student, was awarded as the Rising Star. Daisy, a Level 3 West Lancs student, was named as the Rising Star at the Health & Social Care competition held at Accrington & Rossendale College. Amy, a Level 2 West Lancs student was awarded second place during the Hair and Beauty competition at Lancaster & Morecambe College, with Maisie, also a West Lancs student awarded as the Rising Star. And cheers were heard for miles around in Skelmersdale when West Lancashire College students came first place in both the Early Years and Engineering competitions held at Blackpool & The Fylde College and at home turf at the West Lancs College campus.

Each competition was judged by a panel that included key local employers, with medals and certificates being awarded to the winners and the runners-up.

Gareth Sutton, Vice Principal at West Lancashire College said, “The Lancashire Skills Competitions have been a fantastic opportunity for our students to get involved, demonstrate their newly developed skills, and work alongside other similar minded students from across our county. We are extremely proud of all participating students for both their great success and for representing the college in a very positive manner.”
