West Lancashire College spoke to former Health and Social Care Level 3 student Lucy, to see how she is getting on with studying Midwifery at Edge Hill University.
Lucy said, "I’ve just finished my first 8 week placement block and it’s been amazing. Don’t get me wrong it’s not easy, but it’s so worth it. So far, I’ve assisted in C-sections and instrumental deliveries and witnessed so many births. I have also delivered 4 beautiful healthy babies myself. I've dealt with bereavement cases, took bloods, observations, catheterised women, removed cannulas, top to toe new born checks and injections and helped support incredible families bring their beautiful babies into this crazy world at the minute.
I’ve been working 14.25 hour shifts, night shifts over weekends and evenings alongside revision but being part of such a valuable team with an incredible role makes it all worth while. I’ve worked with doctors, nurses, anethesists and in the low risk areas of midwifery and also the extremely high risk ones too. It’s definitely a whirlwind, but it’s the most privileged role ever."
