Neil Farrell
Head of Curriculum for Creative Service IndustriesHaving studied Sport and Exercise Science through college and university, I began my career in the sport and active leisure industry before moving into the education sector. During my time at West Lancashire College, I have managed a wide breadth of Curriculum areas and different types of learning provision. This has included 16-18 provision, adult education, apprenticeship provision, Higher Education, community learning programmes through to provision for adults and young people with SEND. I strongly believe that education has the power to transform lives and that everyone should have access to high quality educational opportunities.
Jonathon Marlow
Uniformed Public Services LecturerI have worked at West Lancashire College for over 10 years, teaching on a variety of programmes and now, I teach Level 2 and Level 3 Public Services. I have a passion to help young people reach their potential and aim to develop their skills and qualities to move onto further education or employment. I like to encourage learners to develop their teamwork, communication and leadership skills, as well as offer further support to learners through enrichment activities, gym sessions and work experience.
Ryan Smith
Uniformed Public Services LecturerI’ve had the pleasure of working at West Lancashire College for over 10 years, after studying my degree in Sports Coaching and playing semi-professional sport. I thoroughly enjoy organising an array of trips and visits for the students to succeed and develop in both practical environments, as well as in the classroom. With my key links to employers in the Public Services industry, I can offer our students a variety of knowledge and introduce them to their potential future role.
Diana
Uniformed Public Services Alumni StudentWest Lancashire College provided me with a solid foundation, as it does for all its students, enabling them to pursue any career or field of study they wish. I am now studying at Edge Hill University.
Rebeca
Uniformed Public Services Alumni StudentI decided to attend West Lancashire College after hearing from a friend that it was a good college. As I had always wanted to join the police force, I chose Public Services, which helped me develop the skills, knowledge, and behaviours needed to pursue my future career. The Army training and navigation walks organised as part of the course helped me confirm that this was the right path for me. My next step is to attend John Moores University to study Professional Policing.
Alfie
Uniformed Public Services Alumni StudentI decided to study the Uniformed Public Services course because I have a dream of working in the fire service. I enjoy all the units on the course as they are relevant to my career goals, and I especially like the practical elements. The college provides a great learning environment to develop my skills, and the free college transport makes getting to and from college easy and stress-free.
Joseph
Uniformed Public Services StudentI chose the Uniformed Public Services course because my goal is to become an RAF Officer. I’ve really enjoyed meeting new people and working with the tutors. College life is great with a different style of timetable compared to school, and I like being able to go off campus for lunch. The free college transport makes it easy to get to and from college. It’s an excellent course for anyone wanting a career in public services, the tutors are supportive, and it’s also fun!
Kai
Uniformed Public Services StudentI chose this course because it prepares you for any service you may want to go into. It’s really interesting and includes lots of practical and fitness-based activities. The course is coursework-based rather than exam-based, which I find much easier than A Levels, while still gaining the same qualification. The thing I have enjoyed most so far is the Army residential trip, a three-day experience where we took part in training and everyday Army exercises. I also really enjoyed the Pendle Hill navigation, which involved hiking all day up the mountainside. For work experience, I have taught several sports sessions at West Lancashire Community High School and helped out at open evenings on multiple occasions. Later this year, I will be completing further work experience with the Army, where I will undertake five hours of hands-on experience.
Harry
Uniformed Public Services Alumni StudentI chose this course because completing it will allow me to pursue an Apprenticeship with the Border Agency. I really enjoyed the international trip to Belfast, which helped with our Irish Troubles assignment and was a great overall experience. The navigation exercise to Pendle Hill was another highlight, as it allowed us to put our map and compass skills into practice outside the classroom. Similarly, the orienteering exercise at Beacon Fell was excellent, giving us independence to navigate in groups and apply what we had learned.
What can I do with a qualification in Uniformed Public Services?
