When and where do I go to enrol?

Don't worry about enrolment. We will be responsible for enrolling you and will contact you individually nearer the time.

What happens if I don't get the grades I need for my chosen course?

We will be able to offer you advice and guidance to choose an alternative route to help you work towards your career aspirations and prepare you for adulthood.

How will I find my way around campus?

You will be given a tour of the campus when you start. Our friendly staff will point you in the right direction if you are lost.

You will be shown where you can catch the college bus, where to purchase meals and snacks, as well as the location of the toilets.

Am I allowed to leave college grounds?

As a student with us, you are able to leave the campus during lunchtimes to visit the local amenities.

You will need to ensure that you are back in time for your lessons.

How would I get to college?

Student Services can provide information on free college coaches, routes, times, bus passes.

You will also receive information about our transport options over email during the enrolment period.

Do I need to wear my lanyard all the time?

Yes, all students, staff and visitors must wear their lanyards around their necks at all times whilst on college premises.

This is to keep everyone safe.

Can I use my mobile phone in college?

You are allowed to bring your phone into college for use at lunch and break times. You would usually be expected to switch your phone off during lesson times, unless in exceptional circumstances, your tutor tells you otherwise.

Is there a dress code?

The dress code at West Lancashire College is informal.

You can wear comfortable clothing, but no hoods or caps are permitted.

Some courses might have a uniform or specialist protective clothing and you will be adviser by your tutor as to what is required.

What are the start, break, lunch and finish times?

This will depend on your course. You will be provided with an individual course timetable which will confirm the relevant times.

Can anyone use the lift?

Anyone is allowed to use the lift, but we require students to give priority to students with mobility issues and disabilities.

How do I address members of staff?

At West Lancashire College, we treat you as an adult. We are a friendly team and you will usually address your tutor by their first name.

What is a Progress Coach?

You will meet your Progress Coach or Personal Tutor when you start college and you will see them on a regular basis.

They will make sure that you are happy on your course, check that you're meeting all attendance requirements, ensure that you're keeping up with your work and assist with any problems.

What clubs and enrichment sessions do you have?

Every year, we offer a range of sporting, leisure and game clubs that take place every Wednesday afternoon at lunchtimes or at the end of the college day.

Your Progress Coach will provide more details.

If I have a problem at home, or I'm feeling anxious or stressed, who do I speak to?

All our staff have experience in helping students with personal issues, which means you can approach anyone.

Our specialist safeguarding and wellbeing team are based on the Level 2 Learner Zone and you can approach them at any time.

Who do I contact about support?

If you are struggling, your first point of contact would be your tutor who will be able to help you address any difficulties that you may be experiencing.

If necessary, they may refer you to our Learning Support Department.

Where can I get resources from for my assisgnments?

Your tutors will be able to point you in the relevant direction.

We use an online Intranet resource called Moodle, which you can access course resources. The Learner Zone provides computers, books and e-books.

Our SpLD Officers can lend specialist support resources if required.

Is there an opportunity for me to complete work experience?

Every student on a programme of study will complete relevant work experience. The work experience process will be explained by your course tutor.

Will I receive support if I want to go to University or employment?

Throughout college, our focus is on progression and preparation for employment, as well as independence.

Whether you are applying to university, looking for an apprenticeship or a full-time job, you will be supported by a range of staff, including tutors, progression coaches and other support staff.
