West Lancashire College proudly marked Colleges Week 2026 with a special visit from Ashley Dalton MP, who toured the Skelmersdale town centre campus and met with staff and students to see first-hand the college’s impact across the community.

Colleges Week is the annual celebration of the vital role colleges play in transforming lives, supporting communities, and powering the economy. Now in its ninth year and part of the #LoveOurColleges campaign, it brings together college leaders, staff, students, employers, parliamentarians, and the wider public to showcase the impact of colleges on individuals and society.

This year’s theme, “Skills for All,” highlights the inclusive, wide-reaching support colleges provide. From school leavers beginning their careers to adults retraining and apprentices learning in the workplace, colleges help people of all ages gain the knowledge, training, and confidence they need to succeed.

During the visit, Principal Christian Thersby guided Ashley Dalton MP around the campus and shared the college’s strategic vision: to deliver an exceptional educational experience that empowers every learner to achieve their full potential and prepares them for lifelong success. Discussions also included upcoming campus investment, future curriculum development, and a forthcoming college-wide volunteering day designed to support local community projects in Skelmersdale.

As part of the tour, Ashley visited the Advanced Construction & Engineering Centre, home to the college’s industry standard Bricklaying, Carpentry & Joinery, Plumbing and Motor Vehicle workshops, and even had the opportunity to put her bricklaying skills to the test!

Following the visit to the College Ashley Dalton MP said “It was great to visit West Lancashire College today and see the fabulous facilities on offer for our local community. West Lancashire College plays a vital role in our borough in delivering skills for all, supporting local employers, and opening doors for people of all ages.

Thank you to the brilliant staff, students, and leaders who make such a difference in West Lancashire, and I look forward to working with them over the coming months.”

Christian Thersby, Principal at West Lancashire College added “I am very proud of the college and the service that we offer to local people, employers, and the wider community. I’d like to thank Ashley for visiting us and look forward to working with her support to shape the next chapter in further education for the people of West Lancashire.”
