In early September, West Lancashire College collaborated with West Lancashire Borough Council, Tawd Valley Developments (TVD) and Volunteer It Yourself (VIY) on an exciting project to revamp Skelmersdale’s Fairhaven Park.
Known as a community park, Fairhaven has undergone a volunteer-centric transformation with the college’s Level 2 Carpentry and Level 3 Bricklaying students assisting with the creation of new tables and benches, as well as a safer walking environment in the underpass with new graffiti artwork and improved lighting.
Amanda Maddocks, Head of Construction said, “Our students had an amazing experience collaborating on the VIY project with Danny Hawkins and his team. They revitalised the local area by painting subways, constructing gabion benches and tables, and refreshing the play area and skate park. Their hard work earned them a City & Guilds qualification, recognising the knowledge, skills and behaviours they demonstrated throughout the project. The public response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for the transformation of the local area. We eagerly anticipate the next local project and future collaborations with Tawd Valley Developments.”
The college are proud to be part of an incredible community project as their students have put their Carpentry and Bricklaying skills to the test whilst out in the world.
Mark Kitts, Manager Director at Tawd Valley Developments Ltd said, "I think we can all agree that the recent collaboration between ourselves and VIY at Fairhaven has been a real success. Thank you to Amanda at West Lancashire College for her enthusiasm and willingness for collaboration on future projects."
