West Lancashire College celebrated Literacy Week from 24th to 28th November to highlight the importance of reading, writing and effective communication in future job roles. The annual event featured an array of fantastic activities organised by the College’s curriculum team to inspire their students and included interactive workshops, creative writing sessions and staff also hosted a ‘book pick-up’ session during lunch time.
The celebration of Literacy Week focused on promoting literacy as an important skill for the students personal and professional development and success.
The week began with Carpentry and Joinery students working on method statements as part of their theory class, Springboard and Aspire students welcomed Daisy Rumble who shared her inspiring career journey to become an accomplished author, as well as offering guidance for them to write their own book.
Staff also hosted a ‘book pick-up’ where books generously donated by college staff were made available to students at no cost, promoting the joy of reading for leisure.
The week continued with Digital students using their reading and web development skills in a book inspired online escape room, Hospitality and Catering students spoke with their lecturer Adam about descriptive words that could be used when talking about restaurants and how food tastes, before writing a review of a restaurant that they've visited and Bricklaying students created pieces of research on foundation types and the source of the ordinance benchmark at the old Liverpool Hospital.
Alex Huskisson, Head of Adult Skills said, “Literacy Week was a fantastic celebration of learning here at West Lancashire College. I’m incredibly proud of how our curriculum teams came together to plan such engaging and meaningful activities for our students. The enthusiasm and enjoyment we saw throughout the week was truly inspiring and it’s clear how valuable these sessions have been in building confidence, skills, as well as a genuine love of reading and writing.”
