To help young people learn more about cyber careers, West Lancashire College opened its doors to local high schools, while their own students headed to Edge Hill University.

Students from West Lancashire College recently experienced first-hand what a high-tech career in Lancashire’s evolving cyber ecosystem could look like as they took part in Lancashire Cyber Festival Education Week.

Organised by the Lancashire Cyber Partnership, the week gave the college students the opportunity to take part in activities that highlighted the value of cyber skills in a range of industry sectors, including aerospace, manufacturing and engineering.

A visit to Edge Hill University saw the students meet with staff and current undergraduate to explore study opportunities and hear from those currently working in cyber roles. Alongside this, students also took part in a virtual capture the flag exercise, competing against other colleges and putting their teamwork and problem-solving skills to the test.

Similarly, West Lancashire College was visited by pupils from local high schools as they hosted a range of interactive cyber and tech related activities, alongside discussions on STEM and cyber training options.

Commenting on West Lancashire College’s involvement in the event, Tony Robinson, Head of STEM said, “West Lancashire College is proud to have participated in the Lancashire Cyber Festival, equipping learners with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world. By engaging with industry experts, stakeholders and cutting-edge cyber technologies, we are proud to be preparing the next generation for the future of Digital and cybersecurity.”

With Lancashire set to be the home of the National Cyber Force headquarters and with the Lancashire Cyber Partnership supporting collaboration across schools, colleges and universities, local opportunities for students are growing.

Education Week showed students of all ages how their interests in computing, mathematics, science, design and creative subjects can lead to exciting roles in cyber and related industries.
