Our Supporting Teaching and Learning course is ideal for those already working in a school environment, as well as adults who are looking to begin a rewarding career as a Teaching Assistant. Designed to provide a recognised qualification, the course equips learners with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to effectively support children and young people in the classroom.

To enrol on this course, you must either be employed within a school setting as a Teaching Assistant or undertake a voluntary placement in a school for a minimum of 6 hours per week.

Throughout your studies, you will be supported by experienced tutors with extensive backgrounds in primary education, who will share valuable industry knowledge, practical advice and real-world insights. By combining classroom learning with hands-on experience, this course will help you develop the confidence and skills needed to support learners and progress within the education sector.

Supporting Teaching and Learning Lecturer

I have worked at West Lancashire College since 2010 and have over 37 years of experience in the Early Years and Education sector. I am passionate about supporting adult learners to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in education. It is incredibly rewarding to see students grow into capable Teaching Assistants, with many securing employment, often within their placement settings, after completing the Supporting Teaching and Learning course.

During lockdown, I spent a great deal of time reflecting on my ambition to work with children. I contacted Mell, one of the course tutors at West Lancashire College, who immediately put me at ease and reassured me that I was making the right decision. I loved every minute of the course, particularly the theory-based elements. The placement aspect was a real highlight, as it gave me the opportunity to put my learning into practice and quickly become an active member of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) team. In February, I successfully secured a full-time position at my placement school, a role that I continue to enjoy immensely. I was also delighted to learn that I would be moving up to Year 1 with my current class and covering the class teacher's PPA time. I was excited to begin this next chapter in my career and continue developing my skills and experience within education.

I found the assignments really interesting, and my industry placement at St John’s C of E Primary School in Burscough helped me realise that I have a strong passion for working with children. Through this experience, I developed a greater understanding of how to support children in their learning and development, which confirmed that this is the career path I want to pursue. Teaching is a career I have wanted to pursue for as long as I can remember. However, I often doubted my abilities, and it was my wife who encouraged me to follow my dream. Since starting the course, I have thoroughly enjoyed both the theoretical aspects of learning and my placement at Newburgh C.E. Primary School, where I gained valuable experience working with children and supporting their learning and development. The placement strengthened my confidence and confirmed my passion for a career in education.
