Wendy Bennett
Assistant PrincipalWendy is the Assistant Principal for the 16-18 provision at West Lancashire College, overseeing Health, Education and Digital, Creative and Service Industries, Construction, and Advanced Engineering. She has extensive experience as a leader and college manager, having worked in education for over 20 years. Wendy is the College's strategic lead for T Levels and curriculum development and is passionate about developing innovative study programmes that enhance progression to higher education, apprenticeships, and employment opportunities for young people. As a leader and manager, Wendy supports colleagues and learners across all departments, creating opportunities that help develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to become successful members of both the local community and wider society. She is committed to ensuring learners are well prepared to make positive personal and professional contributions throughout their lives.

Hairdressing LecturerI am a passionate and experienced educator with a wealth of industry knowledge, holding Master Colour Expert status. I take great pride in supporting students as they develop their creativity, skills, and confidence for a career in this ever-evolving industry. Helping to inspire and shape the hairdressers of the future is one of the most rewarding aspects of my role.
Alison Barford
Hairdressing LecturerI have worked in the hairdressing industry for over 30 years, including more than 15 years as a hairdressing educator. I am passionate about helping students reach their full potential and progress into successful careers within the hairdressing industry. I also enjoy continuously developing my own skills and knowledge, which I am able to pass on to my students. As a lecturer, I strive to create an effective and supportive learning environment that enables students to achieve their hairdressing qualifications and develop their confidence. Through their studies, students gain the essential knowledge, practical skills, and professional behaviours needed to prepare them for a successful career in the hairdressing sector.
Anthony Dickinson
Bricklaying LecturerI have been a lecturer at West Lancashire College for 10 years. Prior to joining the College, I worked in the construction industry for more than 28 years, developing a broad range of specialist knowledge and practical skills that I now bring to the classroom. I am a dedicated and knowledgeable lecturer with a passion for education and a strong commitment to student success. My extensive industry experience enables me to provide valuable insights and real-world applications, helping students develop a deeper understanding of their subject and prepare for careers within the construction sector. I design and deliver curricula that align with both course objectives and the needs of learners. To support active learning and cater to different learning styles, I incorporate a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, interactive discussions, case studies, and hands-on practical activities. I take great pride in helping students develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to achieve their goals and succeed in their chosen careers.
Alan Finnetty
Bricklaying LecturerI am a passionate Brickwork lecturer with over 40 years of experience in the construction industry. Throughout my career, I have developed a broad range of knowledge and skills while working on the construction of large residential developments, hospitals, and schools for recognised construction companies. In addition to my industry experience, I have over 15 years of experience in education, teaching and mentoring both 16 to 18-year-old learners and adult students. I hold qualifications in tutoring and assessing Brickwork at Levels 1, 2, and 3, as well as Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) and assessment qualifications. Throughout my career in further education, I have worked with a diverse range of learners, including students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and school groups. I am committed to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment that enables every student to develop their skills, achieve their qualifications, and progress towards a successful career in the construction industry.
Trevor Wells
Electrical LecturerI moved into teaching in 2009 and have worked at West Lancashire College ever since, delivering Level 2 and Level 3 Electrical courses. Throughout my career in education, I have had the privilege of working with many talented students, supporting them as they develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to succeed in the electrical industry.
Mike Ashcroft
Engineering LecturerI am a time-served engineer with over 22 years of industry experience across the aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, and glass manufacturing sectors. I am passionate about helping students achieve the best possible outcomes and actively engage with local employers to create valuable opportunities for our learners. Drawing on my extensive industry experience and technical knowledge, I bring learning to life by placing it within a real-world context. This helps to spark students’ interest, enhance their understanding, and prepare them for successful careers in engineering. I take great pride in developing the next generation of engineers and supporting them as they build the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to thrive in the industry.
Gareth Lloyd
Engineering LecturerI have worked at West Lancashire College since 2021, delivering engineering subjects including CAD, CNC, and Design to both BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma students. I have also taught CAD/CAM and Engineering Project units to HNC and HND students. Prior to moving into education, I worked as a time-served Toolmaker, developing expertise in a range of machining techniques, including milling, turning, and cylindrical and surface grinding. I also gained extensive experience in the manufacture, maintenance, and modification of power press tools. I draw upon my industry experience to provide learners with practical, real-world insights that enhance their understanding of engineering principles and practices. I am passionate about supporting students in developing the technical skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to succeed in their studies and future careers within the engineering sector.
Caroline Stewart
Sports LecturerI began working at West Lancashire College in 2013 after completing my PGCE placement there. Having been involved in sport for over 25 years, my passion for the subject continues to grow, with a particular focus on physiology, personal training, and sports therapy. Working with young people who share my enthusiasm for sport is one of the aspects of my role that I enjoy most. Seeing students achieve their goals, develop their confidence, and progress to positive destinations makes the role incredibly rewarding and worthwhile.
Robert Boardman
Sports LecturerAfter completing my PGCE in Further Education, I secured my first teaching role in Sport at West Lancashire College. Teaching has always been my greatest passion and career ambition, and I feel privileged to work in a role that I find so rewarding. My favourite part of teaching is working alongside students to help them achieve their personal goals and witnessing those "light bulb" moments when a challenging topic finally clicks after hard work and determination. Supporting learners as they grow in confidence, develop new skills, and realise their potential is what inspires me every day. I was excited to begin my first full year in teaching and looked forward to inspiring the next generation to pursue their own career aspirations and achieve their goals.
Matthew Jankowski
Maths LecturerI have loved mathematics since I was young and have always had a keen interest in helping others appreciate the satisfaction of solving a difficult problem. This passion inspired me to become a teacher, and I have enjoyed every day of the profession since. My favourite part of the job is seeing those "light bulb" moments when students finally understand a topic that has challenged them. I strive to keep my lessons engaging and light-hearted, helping to change perceptions of mathematics and demonstrate that it can be both accessible and enjoyable.
John Togher
English LecturerI am the Course Leader for GCSE English and have worked at West Lancashire College for 14 years. As a published writer, I am passionate about helping young people develop a strong understanding of how language works, not only for their GCSE studies but also for everyday life, whether communicating in person or online. I am equally passionate about nurturing creativity and helping learners find their voice. By developing their communication, analytical, and creative skills, I aim to give students the confidence and tools they need to express themselves effectively and succeed in their future studies, careers, and personal lives.
Andrew Dowd
Maths LecturerI have worked at West Lancashire College since 2022. From an early age, I have had a strong interest in numbers and patterns, which inspired me to study Mathematics and ultimately achieve a Master's degree from Lancaster University. I have been teaching Mathematics for more than 10 years and am passionate about helping learners develop their numeracy, problem-solving, and analytical skills. One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is seeing students grow in confidence, achieve their qualifications, and progress towards their personal, academic, and career goals.
James Gleave
Motor Vehicle LecturerI gained my Motor Vehicle qualifications at West Lancashire College and, throughout my career, have worked alongside BMW-trained Master Technicians, as well as independent Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen specialists. This industry experience has allowed me to develop extensive technical knowledge and practical skills, which I am passionate about sharing with the next generation of motor vehicle professionals.
Claire Procter
Beauty Therapy LecturerI have worked in the Spa and Beauty industry for more than 20 years. After completing my training at Skelmersdale College, I began my career as a Spa and Massage Therapist on board a cruise ship. This role gave me the opportunity to travel the world, visit many different countries, and gain valuable industry experience while doing a job I loved. Following this, I lived and worked abroad before returning to the UK to become self-employed. I have now been teaching at West Lancashire College for 19 years, delivering all Beauty Therapy qualifications. The Spa and Beauty industry is constantly evolving, with new treatments, techniques, and innovations emerging all the time. Being a teacher is incredibly rewarding, particularly when I see learners achieve their qualifications, develop their confidence and skills, and progress into successful careers within the industry.
Samantha Pillai
Beauty Therapy LecturerI have worked in the beauty industry since 2001, gaining a wealth of experience and knowledge that I am passionate about sharing with our students. Early in my career, I joined Steiner Transocean and progressed to become a Senior Spa Therapist on board its luxury cruise liners, developing both my technical expertise and customer service skills while working in a fast-paced international environment. For the past 13 years, I have dedicated my career to education, helping learners develop the skills, confidence, and professionalism needed to succeed within the beauty industry. I have a strong passion for the sector and a keen eye for detail, which I bring to every aspect of my teaching. Supporting students as they achieve their qualifications and progress towards rewarding careers is one of the most fulfilling parts of my role.
Aron Hartley
Digital LecturerPrior to teaching at West Lancashire College, I completed both an Honours Degree and a Master's Degree in Computing, specialising in Games Programming and Visual Computing. I currently teach on the BTEC Level 3 Computing course and the T Level in Software Development, allowing me to draw upon my specialist knowledge and industry expertise. With a wide range of programming units and a specialist games development unit, I enjoy designing engaging lessons that reflect my own experience and passion for computing. Sharing this knowledge with learners and helping them develop their technical skills is one of the most rewarding aspects of my role. I am passionate about inspiring the next generation of computing professionals. I particularly enjoy working with students who may initially feel that computing is too technical or challenging, showing them that, with practice, commitment, and the right support, programming can be both engaging and enjoyable. My goal is to help learners build the confidence, knowledge, and skills they need to succeed in their studies and future careers.
Ryan Smith
Uniformed Public Services LecturerI have had the pleasure of working at West Lancashire College for over 10 years, following the completion of my degree in Sports Coaching and a career playing semi-professional sport. I am passionate about supporting students to achieve their goals and thoroughly enjoy organising a wide range of trips, visits, and enrichment activities that help them develop both in practical environments and in the classroom. Through my strong links with employers in the Public Services sector, I am able to provide students with valuable industry insight, broaden their understanding of career opportunities, and introduce them to potential future career paths. I take great pride in helping learners develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to succeed in their chosen profession.
Jonathon Marlow
Uniformed Public Services LecturerI have worked at West Lancashire College for over 10 years, teaching across a variety of programmes and currently delivering Level 2 and Level 3 Public Services courses. I am passionate about helping young people reach their full potential and supporting them in developing the skills, knowledge, and personal qualities needed to progress into further education, apprenticeships, or employment. I encourage learners to develop their teamwork, communication, and leadership skills through both classroom-based learning and practical experiences. I also provide additional support through enrichment activities, gym sessions, and work experience opportunities, helping students build confidence and prepare for successful futures within the Public Services sector and beyond.
Katie Hampson
Inclusive Learning LecturerAs a lecturer at West Lancashire College, I coordinate and design an outstanding curriculum for learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Behavioural, Emotional and Social Difficulties (BESD). I hold a PGCE in Post-Compulsory Education and Training from Edge Hill University and have over 15 years of experience within the education sector. My core strengths include specialist education, empathy, teamwork, communication, organisational skills, adaptability, flexibility, and leadership. In my current role, I deliver high-quality knowledge, skills, and behaviours (KSBs) that support and enhance individual learner outcomes. I create a strong focus on intent, implementation, and impact to maximise learner success, while embedding Cognitive Stimulation Therapy within my practice. I work closely with colleagues and local communities to foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. I am passionate about helping learners overcome challenges, build confidence, and achieve their full potential. As a member of the Institute of Leadership & Management, I bring a broad range of perspectives and experiences to my role. I also coach and mentor aspiring leaders through the NCG Leadership Hub, supporting their professional development and helping them become effective future leaders.

Art and Design LecturerLike all of the Art and Design staff at West Lancashire College, I am a practising artist. It is always a pleasure to work with like-minded creative individuals and to see their skills, confidence, and ideas develop over time.

Early Years Education LecturerI have a great enthusiasm and passion for the Early Years sector. With a wealth of first-hand industry experience, I am able to share valuable knowledge and insights with our students, helping them develop the skills, confidence, and understanding needed to succeed as Early Years Practitioners. Supporting students on their journey into this rewarding profession is something I am truly passionate about.
Louise Curran
Art and Design LecturerAs a multidisciplinary artist and designer with a background in film and television costume design, I bring a relevant and realistic insight into working within the creative industries. As an educator, I have experience working with learners of all ages, abilities, backgrounds, and beliefs across a wide range of artistic disciplines. I believe effective Art and Design education should both nurture and challenge the individuality and creativity of every student, while equipping them with the technical skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to progress in their chosen specialism. I am passionate about what I do and consider it a privilege to play a role in helping our students realise their creative and professional potential.
Gary Disley
Carpentry and Joinery LecturerI began my career in the construction industry when I left school, training as a joiner and carpenter. I completed a three-year apprenticeship, achieving both my City & Guilds qualifications and Advanced City & Guilds qualifications. Since then, I have worked on a variety of construction projects across the country, gaining extensive industry experience and developing a broad range of practical skills and knowledge. My career in education began as an on-site assessor, supporting apprentices in the workplace and helping them achieve their NVQ qualifications. I later moved into full-time teaching and have now been teaching for over 14 years, working with both full-time students and apprentices up to Level 3. I am passionate about sharing my industry experience and supporting learners as they develop the skills, confidence, and qualifications needed for successful careers in the construction sector.
Mell Watkins
Early Years Education LecturerI have worked at West Lancashire College since March 2010 and have been part of the Early Years and Education sector for many years. I gain great satisfaction from teaching our students and equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and behaviours they need to succeed and reach their full potential. I feel privileged to work with such wonderful students and to play a part in their learning journey. It is incredibly rewarding to see them grow and develop into confident, skilled, and competent Early Years and Education practitioners, ready to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

Health and Social Care LecturerI teach on the Level 2 and Level 3 Health and Social Care programmes and, as an experienced educator, I am passionate about helping students develop an understanding of health, nutrition, and their vital role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I thoroughly enjoy teaching Health and Social Care and find it incredibly rewarding to see students work hard, achieve their goals, and progress to positive destinations, including employment within the care sector and higher education across a wide range of disciplines. I am part of a small, dedicated, and highly effective team that is committed to supporting every learner to achieve their full potential.
