West Lancs college students win Royal Award

Friday, March 11 2016

West Lancashire College are delighted to announce The Prince’s Trust Team 42 have won a national award at The Prince’s Trust and Samsung Celebrate Success Awards.

HRH The Prince of Wales, founder and President of The Prince's Trust, joined 2000 guests, including Tom Hardy, Geri Horner, Rita Ora, Alesha Dixon, Bear Grylls and Dynamo, at a red carpet ceremony hosted by Ant & Dec at the Palladium in London.

The Prince’s Trust & Samsung Celebrate Success Awards, now in their twelfth year, recognise disadvantaged young people who have overcome issues such as abuse, drug addiction, homelessness, depression and unemployment.

A series of regional events took place in November and December 2015 and culminated in the national final at the Palladium. Seven awards were given out on Monday by Prince’s Trust Celebrity Ambassadors.

The group’s incredible achievements means they are just one of three groups across the UK to be nominated for the EMC Community Impact Award, which recognises the positive contribution young people make to their local community whilst developing their own skills.

Bear Grylls, who presented the team with their award said: “I have been so very impressed meeting all these young people. It has been an incredibly humbling experience: each and every one of them has shown resolve and courage to turn their lives around. I am so proud to be with them on their special day.”

Despite experiencing diverse challenges in their own lives, eight young people from Skelmersdale, Lancashire, came together on The Prince’s Trust’s Team programme to play
their part in helping some of their community’s most isolated people.

After meeting on Team, which is delivered in partnership with West Lancashire College and is designed to equip unemployed young people with the skills and confidence they need to find work, the group invited three charities to pitch for their help.

The Team agreed that Yewdale Counselling Service was most in need. This free counselling service is run by volunteers, helping many people in the local community.

Working together to brainstorm ideas, the team came up with a blueprint for a therapeutic garden that included creating different areas within the garden itself and installing individual seating areas.

It took four weeks to transform the garden into a tranquil haven. The team’s determination to do a good job often saw them work at weekends and late into the night. They even repainted rooms inside the centre with subtle colour schemes personally chosen by the team to create a relaxing environment for users of the counselling service.

Encouraging each other when things got tough and learning essential life skills, Team 42 grew as individuals throughout the project, and developed a level of empathy and
understanding towards each other that made them stronger and more positive.

Yewdale Counselling Service now has a beautiful garden that is regularly used by its service users and staff, and the young people have a sense of pride that will stay with them forever.

All team members have progressed into employment, education or training.

Ryan, 21, from Team 42 says: “Receiving this award has been fantastic; it’s amazing to be recognised for our efforts. We’re ecstatic!”

Chris Gould, Director of Sales Strategy, EMC UK&I says: “EMC is very proud to present Team 42 with the EMC Community Impact Award. The care they took in delivering the project and the determination they showed is exemplary. We hope that they will inspire many more to take part in fantastic Prince’s Trust projects across the country to improve their skills and help local communities. Huge congratulations, Team 42!

Maria Gilling, Principal, West Lancashire College, added “'I am delighted that our students, Skelmersdale Team 42, won the national Prince's Trust Community Impact Award. They had an amazing day at the 40th anniversary Celebrating Success Awards and I am so proud of them and all our staff who supported them in this marvellous achievement.”

Since 2012, Samsung has supported The Prince's Trust to enhance the lives of young people. As the partnership now moves into its fourth year, Samsung is continuing to work
closely with The Prince’s Trust to introduce technology initiatives, embedding digital and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills across its programmes through the installation of Digital Classrooms at its centres.

Youth charity The Prince's Trust is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. In the last four decades, it has given over 825,000 disadvantaged young people the skills and confidence
to find a job. Three in four young people helped by The Prince’s Trust move into work, training or education.
