Inspirational Prince's Trust Team 42 up for Royal Award

Monday, February 22 2016

The group, known as Skelmersdale Team 42 won the North West Fire and Rescue Service Community Impact Award a few months ago and have since been nominated to go through to the national final which will be held at the Palladium in London on 7th March 2016 (from 2pm). The red carpet ceremony will be hosted by Ant & Dec.

The Prince’s Trust & Samsung Celebrate Success Awards, now in their twelfth year, recognise disadvantaged young people who have overcome issues such as abuse, drug addiction, homelessness, depression and unemployment.

A series of regional events took place in November and December 2015 and will culminate in the national final at the Palladium. Seven awards will be given out on the day by Prince’s Trust Celebrity Ambassadors. Kevin Spacey, Thierry Henry, Simon Cowell, Rod Stewart, and Penny Lancaster were among the celebrities who attended last year’s event.

The group’s incredible achievements means they are now just one of three other groups  across the UK to be nominated for the EMC Community Impact Award which recognises the positive contribution young people make to their local community whilst developing their own skills.

Despite experiencing diverse challenges in their own lives, eight young people from Skelmersdale, Lancashire, came together on The Prince’s Trust’s Team programme to play their part in helping some of their community’s most isolated people.

After meeting on Team, which is delivered in partnership with West Lancashire College and is designed to equip unemployed young people with the skills and confidence they need to find work, the group invited three charities to pitch for their help.

The Team agreed that Yewdale Counselling Service was most in need. This free counselling service is run by volunteers, helping many people in the local community.

Working together to brainstorm ideas, the team came up with a blueprint for a therapeutic garden that included creating different areas within the garden itself and installing individual seating areas.

It took four weeks to transform the garden into a tranquil haven. The team’s determination to do a good job often saw them work at weekends and late into the night. They even repainted rooms inside the centre with subtle colour schemes personally chosen by the team to create a relaxing environment for users of the counselling service.

Encouraging each other when things got tough and learning essential life skills, Team 42 grew as individuals throughout the project, and developed a level of empathy and understanding towards each other that made them stronger and more positive.

Ryan Formby, Prince’s Trust Assistant Team Leader at West Lancashire College says, “I’ve never seen a process of bonding like this team displayed. They had many issues and barriers to overcome before they started the programme, but the continuous support they displayed towards each other was outstanding.”

Yewdale Counselling Service now has a beautiful garden that is regularly used by its service users and staff, and the young people have a sense of pride that will stay with them forever.

All team members have progressed into employment, education or training.

Chris Gould, Director of Sales Strategy at EMC says: “We are a proud supporter of The Prince’s Trust which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. We are very proud of the achievements of every member of Skelmersdale Team 42. They have learnt new skills while doing a useful project for their local community. We hope that their story will inspire many others to take part in The Prince’s Trust’s Team programme.”

Since 2012, Samsung has supported The Prince's Trust to enhance the lives of young people. As the partnership now moves into its fourth year, Samsung is continuing to work closely with The Prince’s Trust to introduce technology initiatives, embedding digital and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills across its programmes through the installation of Digital Classrooms at its centres.

Youth charity The Prince's Trust is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. In the last four decades, it has given over 825,000 disadvantaged young people the skills and confidence to find a job. Three in four young people helped by The Prince’s Trust move into work, training or education.
