Research & Scholarly Activity

Research and scholarship are fundamental to higher education. We encourage staff and students to develop as researchers and provide the necessary resources and support for both to excel.

Relevant to industry

West Lancashire College has a strong record in conducting successful research projects, particularly in partnership with employers and industry. Teaching and learning is enriched by the latest research and scholarship. This means that our qualifications are seen as current and valuable by industry and employers, with whom many of our courses have been developed.

As a student at West Lancashire College you’ll be encouraged to broaden your research skills by developing and leading your own projects within a supportive academic atmosphere. We offer opportunities and support for students to communicate their findings to a wide audience, including a dedicated Higher Education Student Conference which acts as a showcase for student projects. You will also have the ability to contribute to the future direction of our research and scholarship through the student representatives on our Research and Scholarly Activity Committee.

Ethics

NCG is committed to ensuring that all research conducted by staff and students conforms to the highest ethical standards. Our institutional research ethics policy embeds the six key principles outlined in the Economic and Social Research Council Framework for Research Ethics (2012):

  1. Research should be designed, reviewed and undertaken to ensure integrity, quality and transparency.
  2. Research staff and participants must normally be informed fully about the purpose, methods and intended possible uses of the research, what their participation in the research entails and what risks, if any, are involved.
  3. The confidentiality of information supplied by research participants and the anonymity of respondents must be respected.
  4. Research participants must take part voluntarily, free from any coercion.
  5. Harm to research participants and researchers must be avoided in all instances.
  6. The independence of research must be clear, and any conflict of interest or partiality must be explicit.

Our ethical approval process is overseen by the institutional Research Ethics Committee and supported by the individual School Ethics Committees. Full guidance and training are provided for students and staff seeking ethical approval for research projects.
